It&#8217;s seldom you start an altmetrics project from a topic.<\/p>\n<p>One obvious choice for getting article ID&#8217;s is either Web of Science or Scopus, but to go down that path you obviously need to have access to them to start with. Another solution is to query the PubMed API for a list of PMID&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the helpful posting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredtrotter.com\/2014\/11\/14\/hacking-on-the-pubmed-api\/\">Hacking on the Pubmed API<\/a> by Fred Trotter, you are led to the PubMed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/advanced\">Advanced Search<\/a> page. There, you can define your  search with a MeSH topic, and filter articles by the publication year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tuijasonkkila.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/advsearch.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tuijasonkkila.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/advsearch-300x195.png\" alt=\"PubMed advanced search\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-349\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tuijasonkkila.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/advsearch-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/tuijasonkkila.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/advsearch.png 304w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>PubMed knows of 4890 articles on <em>diabetes mellitus<\/em>, published this year.<\/p>\n<p>As Fred explains, by URLencoding this <em>Search details<\/em> string and joining it to the base URL, you are ready to approach the API.<\/p>\n<p>If you are familiar with R, here is <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/tts\/a6fd3aa47097b2c888c7\">one solution<\/a>. From 4890 articles, <a href=\"http:\/\/altmetric.com\">Altmetric<\/a> had metrics on 505, based on PMID.
